Hands-on Training Overview

Atmel AVR XMEGA Robot Lab Course Summary
Here you will receive a basic introduction to microcontroller-based robotics using a simple two drive platform based on the Atmel AVR® XMEGA® A3BU Xplained microcontroller (MCU). Attendees will learn the basics of key MCU peripherals like timers and analog to digital convertors in implementing a simple collision avoidance robot.

Agenda / Course Outline
12:00 – 1:00 pm  Lunch and Session 1: Getting Started
This is an introduction to Atmel Studio and the AVR XMEGA A3BU Xplained MCU.  The first session will introduce you to the basics of Studio 6 by building a quick example project and then running it on the AVR XMEGA A3BU boards.

1:00 – 3:30 pm    Lab Session 2: Controlling Servo Motors

The second lab session will introduce basic concepts as timers, interrupts and pulse width modulation as you learn how to control a standard servo motor. This training will be used to develop a basic 2 motor robot platform drive system.

3:30 – 5:00 pm    Lab Session 3: Sensing Objects and Avoiding Them

The last session will introduce the concept of Analog to Digital conversion. You will learn how to interface a simple IR distance sensor to the AVR XMEGA A3BU board and then use its data output to control the direction and path of the two wheel robot platform.
