In the IoT application space, Sensor Nodes are enabled by a number of fundamental technologies, primarily a low-power MCU, some form of wireless communication and strong security. In order to focus attention on the practical aspects of combining the associated supporting devices and software, this Tech on Tour training introduces the Atmel® Wi-Fi capability and CryptoAuthentication™ hardware key storage in the context of the simplest possible use case. Turning on an LED—the simplest first step in playing with any new development kit or technology—represents our ‘Hello World!’. Of course to any engineer this apparently simple act solidifies a cause-and-effect relationship between the engineer’s will, the embedded hardware and all the supporting technologies that are now under his/her control. In the IoT application, the LED is controlled using a smart phone app via the Internet, while our sensor–node use case is enabled by reading an analog temperature sensor. The first part of the training introduces Atmel Wi-Fi technology, which connects our embedded development kit of choice, an Atmel | SMART SAMD21 Xplained Pro, via the Atmel SmartConnect WINC1500 Wi-Fi module to a local Access Point. The result is the ability to send temperature information to any phone or tablet on the network as well as the remote control of LED0. As soon as something is connected, those with questionable objectives may find-it and potentially figure out how to control it. The second part of the training will focus on how CryptoAuthentication can be used to authenticate the temp sensor node and host application before it can read the temperature information to avoid fake nodes. A secure communications link is implemented using a session key to and from the remote node. |
